§1The Shape of Waco's Tech and AI Market
Baylor University is the gravitational center. Its Hankamer School of Business, Department of Computer Science, and the recently expanded research initiatives produce graduates and faculty consultants who serve regional employers. Baylor's growing R1 status has pushed more research dollars into machine learning and data science, particularly in applied health and biomedical informatics through the Baylor Research and Innovation Collaborative (BRIC) building south of campus. Texas State Technical College, headquartered in Waco, contributes a different kind of pipeline focused on applied technical roles—data engineering, infrastructure, and increasingly AI/ML certifications. The non-academic anchors are Baylor Scott & White Health (with major facilities in Temple just south of Waco), Ascension Providence, L3Harris's Waco operations, and a strong manufacturing base including Mars Wrigley, Sanderson Farms (now Wayne-Sanderson), and a long roster of smaller industrial firms along Highway 6 and I-35. The Magnolia Network and related Chip and Joanna Gaines businesses have also built a meaningful digital and analytics team, primarily focused on e-commerce, content, and direct-to-consumer operations. Coworking and tech meetup activity centers downtown around the Magnolia Market district and the Greater Waco Chamber's innovation programming. Compensation for senior AI roles runs roughly 10 to 20 percent below Austin, with healthcare and large manufacturers at the upper end of the local range.
