EKU and the I-75 Corridor
Eastern Kentucky University is Richmond's largest employer and most significant institutional anchor. EKU's Department of Computer Science, the College of Justice and Safety (with applied analytics work in criminal justice), and the College of Health Sciences all support computing and analytics programs that produce graduates moving into regional employers. The university's growing emphasis on applied research and industry partnerships creates occasional consulting opportunities for faculty and recent graduates. Downtown Richmond and the area around the EKU campus host the city's professional services activity. Newer commercial development along the Eastern Bypass and toward Berea (a smaller community 15 miles south famous for its arts and crafts heritage and Berea College) extends the metro economy. Several remote workers and independent consultants operate from Richmond, drawn by housing affordability, the I-75 corridor location making both Lexington and Knoxville reachable, and the lifestyle of a college town. The Madison County Industrial Authority and the Richmond Chamber of Commerce support business and technology development. The presence of the Bluegrass Army Depot just outside Richmond adds defense-related federal employment to the local mix. Kentucky State Police's training academy and other state operations contribute additional public-sector technical activity.
