A Research Park Tech Footprint
The ISU Research Park, on the south edge of Ames near Highway 30, anchors the city's industry-research interface. The park hosts more than 100 companies including major tenants Corteva Agriscience, John Deere Intelligent Solutions Group, Vermeer Applied Technology Hub, and Workiva, plus a long roster of small ag-tech and biotech firms. Many of these companies were spun out of ISU labs and continue to maintain dense relationships with faculty and students. The result is an unusually fluid market where graduate students transition into industry research roles, faculty consult for tenant companies, and senior engineers move between the park and the university over their careers. Downtown Ames near Main Street and Welch Avenue near campus host most of the city's coworking and small startup activity, while Workiva's downtown campus has helped revitalize the central business district. ISU's Translational AI Center and the AIIRA Institute, an NSF-funded ag AI institute, coordinate cross-disciplinary work that spans plant phenotyping, precision agriculture, and digital twins for farms. For students, the path from a senior project to a paid summer role at a research park company is well-trodden, which keeps junior talent local longer than in most college towns.
